Nowmaybeweshouldadjustfaster;maybeweshouldadjustslower.Butwhatevertheeratwenty--whatevertheera,whateverthetimes,onethingwillneverchange:fathersandmothers,ifyouhavechildren, theymustcomefirst.Youmustreadtoyourchildren,andyoumusthugyourchildren,andyoumustloveyourchildren. Yoursucceasafamily,oursucceasasociety,dependsnotonwhathaeintheWhiteHouse,butonwhathaeiideyourhouse. Foroverfiftyyears,itwassaidthatthewierofWellesley'saualhoopracewouldbethefirsttogetmarried.Nowtheysay, thewierwillbethefirsttobecomeaC.E.O.Both--Bothofthosestereotypesshowtoolittletoleranceforthosewhowanttoknowwherethemermaidsstand.So--SoIwanttoofferanewlegend:thewierofthehoopracewillbethefirsttorealizeherdream--notsociety'sdream--herownpersonaldream. Andwho--Whoknows?Somewhereoutinthisaudiencemayevenbesomeonewhowillonedayfollowinmyfootste,andpresideovertheWhiteHouseasthePresident'souse--andIwishhimwell. Well,thecontroversyendshere.Butourconversationisonlybegiing.Andaworthwhileconversationithasbeen.SoasyouleaveWellesleytoday,takewithyoudeepthanksforthecourtesyandthehonoryouhavesharedwithMrs.Gorbachevandwithme.
